National Pollutant Inventory (NPI)

The National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) is a public internet database managed by the Commonwealth, that reports emissions data from a range of industries.

Advitech has been assisting clients with their NPI reporting since the program was introduced in 1998. We continue to stay up-to-date with reporting requirements and legislative changes.

What's Involved in Reporting?

All facilities that exceed the reporting thresholds, whether licenced by an environmental authority or not, are required to report to the NPI. The NPI reporting year typically runs from 1 July to 30 June, with a submissions deadline of 30 September of each year.

For most industries, emission estimation handbooks have been prepared as a guide. These handbooks provide the emission estimation factors that are approved from each industry, to estimate their emissions.

The NPI report requires a comprehensive assessment of the emission estimates from a facility over the reporting period. The requirement to report on any one of the 93 substances within the NPI is based on an assessment of the facility's activities and whether the use of NPI substances, consumption of fuel or electricity, or discharge of nitrogen or phosphorus, exceeds trigger thresholds.

If your facility triggers the reporting thresholds, you are required to prepare and submit an NPI report.

NPI Spreadsheet Templates

Advitech develops NPI spreadsheets for each company's NPI reporting. Once established, these templates can used again each year - reducing NPI reporting times by up to 75%. Companies can also choose to purchase their own spreadsheets and undertake NPI reporting in-house.
